Newton’s first law, otherwise known as inertia, states that objects at rest stay at rest, and objects in motion stay in motion. People are great examples of inertia. Often, we take a long time to lay down our roots. When we do, we dig them deep. However, inertia also states that these objects will change when acted upon by an unbalanced force, whether they are in motion or at rest.

Just like the vague “Object”, we do not exist in a vacuum and are subject to changes. Many people tend to fear change, especially when it comes to finding a new home. Whether you are taking your roommates and cat to the apartment upstairs or hiring movers on a cross-country trip to Brooklyn, you will be in for a big undertaking. However, change doesn’t have to be a bad thing! Let’s go through some tips to make that can make the transitional period a little easier.

  1. Make sure to get your closure! Whether that’s saying goodbye to your neighbors, checking your mailbox again, or just going through some of your motions, do what you have to do to find peace. There is nothing so silly that it isn’t worth doing one last time, especially if no one is watching.
  2. Look to the future! Try not to worry about what you are leaving behind. That’s what memories are for! Instead, think about all of the opportunities and experiences that await at your new location.
  3. Make lists. I cannot overstate how important lists are when it comes to things like this. Make a list of all of the furniture you have to move upstairs. Make one for the people you have to call and the appointments you have to make. Just focus on making things organized, and it will all seem so much less daunting.
  4. Assess your options. You do not have to be going to a different state to tag in some helpers. Say you already live in Brooklyn and you’re switching offices rather than homes, you can still ring up some movers. There are pros and cons to everything, and looking into these is important.

Finally, take some deep breaths. Relax. There’s more to life than these big shifts, and you will be laying down and falling asleep in no time. Try not to get too much tunnel vision. You’ve got this!
